Detective Shelita Leggett began working with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in September of 1999 in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. A year into her career she began working part-time with the Young Marines program. In July 2002 she was a full-time employee within the Juvenile Division. She successfully completed the JPSO Police Academy in February 2003 and later was promoted to Detective. Her day to day operations are on the West Bank and involve accepting and processing applications for the program. She counsels the young adults while reminding them of the mission, creed and obligation of the Young Marines. The program focuses on character building through a combination of self-discipline, teamwork and leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle for boys and girls ages 8 through high school.

"Most of all, I would like to Thank God, and my husband Derrick Leggett who also works for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office for his support and motivation; and all my commanders who help make this possible," said Leggett. "I would also like to thank the Young Marines Instructors and Staff for their assistance within the program."
