   ROBBERY ARREST

Sheriff Newell Normand announces the arrest of Addison Estem, B/M, 23, of 2800 Mount Kennedy in Marrero.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2008, around 5:52 PM, a 50 year old Asian male of New Orleans LA was robbed in the parking lot of Boomtown Casino in Harvey of approximately $1000.00.

In a follow up investigation conducted by Robbery Detectives Russell Varmall and Kevin Balser, the suspect was identified through a witness as Addison Estem. Investigators believe Addison Estem followed the victim from inside of the casino as he walked to his vehicle, and after a brief struggle, grabbed the money from the victim?s pocket and fled. Estem was last seen driving away in a blue four-door vehicle.

Within hours of the initial incident, additional information developed during this investigation led detectives to the home of Addison Estem at 2800 Mount Kennedy, Apartment 1308 in Marrero. Detectives Varmall and Balser questioned Estem regarding the incident at Boomtown resulting in Addison Estem confessing to committing the robbery at Boomtown earlier that evening. Addison Estem was arrested and booked with one count of simple robbery.

OFFICER INVOLVED ACCIDENT

On May 5, 2008 around 8:23 am, our officers responded to an accident with injuries involving one of our police units at Harvard Avenue and Kawanee Avenue in Metairie. Responding officers learned Officer K.K. Karanja was on duty driving his fully marked Crown Victoria west on Kawanee Ave when he was struck by a maroon 1999 Ford Taurus traveling north on Harvard Ave.

The investigation revealed the Taurus, being driven by Liki Price, B/F, 29, of 3617 Martinique Drive in Kenner, ran the stop sign and struck the police unit. Three additional passengers were in the Taurus, a 3 year old male, a 3 year old female, and an 11 year old female. The 3 year old male was transported to Children's Hospital for minor injuries. Officer Karanja was transported to East Jefferson Hospital here he was treated and released.

The driver of the Taurus, Ms. Liki Price, was issued citations for disregarding a stop sign, no driver's license, and no child restraint devices used.

FETICIDE ARREST

On Sunday May 4th, 2008,around 1:27 AM, our 911 Center was notified by West Jefferson Hospital of a female shot in the abdomen. The female victim, identified as Shawnell Walker, B/F, 17, of 1249 Cohen St in Marrero. She was approximately 22 weeks pregnant. While under going surgery, the fetus expired. Ms. Walker remains in critical condition.

In a follow up investigation, Detective Gary Barteet learned, a subject identified as Wilbert L. Luke Jr., B/M, 19, of 1013 Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey, transported the victim, who was a friend of his, to West Jefferson's Emergency room earlier this morning.

Luke initially reported he discovered the victim shot on Cohen St. near Acre Rd. in Marrero. However, after being questioned by Detective Barteet he admitted shooting the victim by accident while showing her a handgun.

Detective Barteet also learned the 22 Cal handgun recovered from the suspect was a stolen firearm from St. Tammany Parish. Luke admitted buying the gun on the streets about a year ago.

Detective Barteet transported Wilbert Luke to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Correctional Center where he was booked with one count of 3rd Degree Feticide and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.

Wilbert Luke has prior arrests for: Theft, Resisting an Officer, Possession of Marijuana, Simple Criminal Damage, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Simple Battery, Aggravated Assault, Possession of Stolen Property, and numerous status offenses.

BURGLARY SUSPECT ARRESTED

Sheriff Newell Normand reports, Abram Conerly, the suspect wanted for four counts of simple burglary was arrested earlier this evening without incident by members of our Street Crimes Unit.

Conerly was arrested at his residence at 1065 Tallow Tree Lane in Harvey. He was transported to our Correctional Facility where he was booked accordingly.

BURGLARY SUSPECT WANTED

Arrests warrants have been issued for a suspect identified as Abram Conerly, B/M, 18, unknown local address for four counts of simple burglary.

Crime Scene Technicians successfully made positive matches of fingerprints belonging to Conerly from inside of homes burglarized at the following locations.

Monday, March 31 at 3329 Abbotwood Drive in Harvey.

Tuesday, April 22 at 351 Fairfield in Gretna.

Friday, April 25 at # 44 Seven Oaks in Marrero.

Tuesday, April 29 at # 63 Oak Alley in Marrero.

Abram Conerly is also wanted on an attachment for Criminal Trespassing. Conerly has extensive prior arrests for multiple burglary and theft charges.

ARMED ROBBERY

On Sunday, April 27, 2008, around 8:36PM, a B/M subject entered a restaurant in the 4600 block of West Bank Expressway (Philly's Steakhouse) armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. The subject was wearing a gray hooded shirt and a black and white baseball cap, his face was covered with a black and white bandanna. The suspect demanded and received the money from the register, and fled on foot. The suspect is described as a black male, 18 to 25 years of age, 5'5" to 5'7", 150 to 170 pounds.

FILING A FALSE POLICE REPORT

On April 26, 2008 around 5:00 AM, our officers responded to a subject shot at 808 Estalotte Street in Harvey. The victim, identified as Jamil Matthews, B/M, 17, of 810 Pailet Street in Harvey was suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot. He was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for his injury. Jamil Matthews reported being shot on Estalotte by an unknown B/M.

On April 28, 2008, Detective Gary Barteet met with the Jamil Matthews after learning his injury may have been self-inflicted. Matthews admitted making up the story about being shot by a B/M. He continued by saying he was running after spotting a marked JPSO police unit while on Estalotte Street. He admitted having a loaded 22 caliber handgun in his waistband and that it accidentally discharged striking him in the foot.

Jamil Matthews was subsequently issued a summons for Filing a False Report.

ATTEMPT ROBBERY

On Monday, April 28, 2008, around 9:17 AM, a B/M subject entered the Crescent Bank and Trust at 1000 Veterans Boulevard in Metairie armed with a handgun. He approached a teller and lifted his shirt displaying the weapon and demanded money. The teller ran from the bank to a neighboring business where she called the Sheriff's Office. The subject fled the business having obtained nothing.

The subject is described as a black male, 30-35, 5'9" to 5'11", 190 to 200 pounds, wearing a dark colored baseball cap with the letters NO and a fleur de' lis design, and a gray zippered hooded sweatshirt.

BODY FOUND IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER

Our 911 Center received a call around 12:30 AM today from the Levee Board Police reporting a tug boat company operating along the banks of the Mississippi River reported seeing a body floating near the levee in the 2300 block of River Road in Bridge City. With the assistance of the Louisiana State Wildlife & Fisheries and our LASER Division the body was retrieved and turned over to the Coroner's Office.

JPSO Detective Gary Barteet's investigation revealed the body was believed to be that of a missing boater involved in a boating accident on the river. Earlier reports indicated the decedent and a friend were in the river when their boat capsized. He is identified as Michael G. Carbonell, W/M, 40, of Gretna.

An autopsy conducted this morning by the JP Coroner's Office showed no signs of trauma, and ruled the cause of death as a drowning.
