INVESTIGATING COMPLAINTS

The Internal Affairs Division's major function is the receiving, processing and investigating of noncriminal complaints initiated by citizens against employees of the Sheriff's Office.
The Criminal or Special Investigation Bureaus investigate all criminal allegations made against employees of the Sheriff's Office.
To ensure the public's trust and maintain the Sheriff's Office integrity, all complaints are investigated timely and objectively. 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. How do I file a complaint against an employee of the Sheriff's Office? 
A. Complaints against any employee will be taken at the Internal Affairs Division during normal business hours. After hour complaints will be taken at the Westbank Correctional Center, or you may call the 911 Communication Center.
Q. In what form can the complaint be filed?
A. The Internal Affairs Division will accept: In person, letters, telephone and in some instances, you will be requested to come to IAD to complete your complaint. A complaint may request anonymity.
Q. What is my responsibility in filing a complaint against an employee of the Sheriff's Office?
A. While the Sheriff's Office does encourage citizens to file complaints, that complaint must be made in "good faith." The filing of a "false complaint" may result in criminal or civil action as prescribed by law.
Q. Will I be threatened or harassed by employees of the Sheriff's Office if I file a complaint?
A. Threats and harassment will not be tolerated.
Q. How long does it take a complaint to be completely investigated?
A. The average investigation takes 30 days to 6 months to complete depending on the complexity of the case.
Q. Will I be notified of the findings?
A. Yes. Both the complainant and the employee are notified of the findings in writing. Should you have any questions about the findings, you are encouraged to contact the Internal Affairs Division.
Q. Do other agencies investigate police misconduct?
A. Yes. The Federal Bureau of Investigation can investigate allegations of misconduct.
