Lieutenant Pernia began her law enforcement career in 1980. She graduated from the Police Academy in January 1981 and was assigned to patrol, where she worked in both the Second and Third District. In 1985 she transferred to the Detective Bureau where she dedicated fourteen years to the Homicide Investigations before moving into the Personal Violence Division. Lieutenant Pernia is now the Commander of Personal Violence, a division that was formed to investigate rape and sex related crimes. She is responsible for and oversees all personal violence cases which also include child abuse, domestic violence and computer crimes. In addition to division management, she is also responsible for critical functions such as reviewing cases, assign and work cases, victim, suspect and witness interviews, court testimonies along with administrative work.

 

"Being an Investigator with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office brings significant personal rewards," said Pernia. "Working in Personal Violence and dealing with child victims, just knowing that I am able to help children and remove them from an abusive situation that has been the most rewarding part of my career."
