Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announces that Friday, November 24, will be the beginning of our annual Holiday Patrol program. In an effort to provide additional resources to deter crime in the shopping corridors of the parish, deputies from our Special Investigations Bureau and Reserve Division will participate in increased patrols around the major shopping areas.Approximately 50 deputies will be assigned to these increased patrols daily. Shoppers will note that the deputies will patrol with their vehicles' emergency lighting activated (whether overhead, dash lights, or some other form) to bring attention to their presence. Our department's helicopter will also be utilized to help coordinate the patrols. The patrols will run on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings throughout the holiday season. They will encompass all of the major thoroughfares in the parish including Veterans and Clearview Boulevards on the Eastbank, Terry Parkway, Barataria and Lapalco Boulevards on the Westbank, and Clearview, Lakeside, and Oakwood Malls. These patrols are used to supplement the security measures taken by the malls themselves. Lakeside Mall will employ as many as 15 detail deputies on high-volume shopping days, while Oakwood Mall will double its security detail for the duration of the holiday season. Our observation towers will also be deployed in the mall parking lots to allow the deputies to keep an eye on shoppers as they walk to their vehicles. These steps are taken to ensure that the Sheriff's Office can provide the safest holiday shopping experience possible. As always, we ask that if anyone sees anything suspicious or concerning, please call 911 and have our deputies respond.
