Sheriff Newell Normand announces the arrests of Davyn William, B/M 17, of 1040 Street Charles Avenue in New Orleans, along with three 15 year-old juvenile suspects. During the late evening hours of July 28, 2017, our officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 3400 block of Severn Avenue. During this incident, investigators determined that two white male victims were “jumped” by four black male suspects, one was armed with a handgun. The victims were ordered to surrender their property before the suspects fled into the nearby neighborhood. A physical description of the suspects was broadcast to responding officers.
One of the robbery victims, described only as a 19 year-old male from Metairie, was transported to University Hospital having suffered a contusion to his face. The other victim, a 17 year-old from New Orleans, told investigators he and his friend were walking near the intersection of 14th Street and Severn Avenue when they heard "heavy footsteps" coming from behind. They turned to find a group of male subjects running towards them from a nearby parking lot. Once they had closed the gap, one of the males showed a black semiautomatic pistol with a silver or chrome slide and told the victims to "give me everything you got." The group then began punching and kicking the victims. One of the suspects struck the 19 year-old in the face with the pistol.
First District Deputies canvassed the area and located the suspects who fled into the surrounding apartment complexes. The first two suspects, identified both as being 15 year olds, were apprehended. A search continued for the remaining suspects. Soon thereafter, our officers located 17-year-old Davyn William. While on the scene, the father of the remaining 15 year-old suspect told our officers that he was in the area looking for his son, who told him that he had just been in a fight. Through a series of text messages, the father convinced his son to turn himself in to police, which he did. At the time of this individual’s arrest, he was found to be in possession of property belonging to one of the robbery victims.
All four suspects were then transported to our Investigations Bureau for further questioning. One of the juvenile suspects initially told investigators, that he, Davyn William and the others were walking together after leaving the mall, when they encountered the victims near the intersection of 14th Street and Severn Avenue. He went on to say they knew one of the victims, prompting them to begin yelling at each other. He further claimed the encounter quickly escalated into a fist fight. When asked about how he came into possession of property belonging to one of the victims, he told investigators he took it after it fell from the victim during the fight. When investigators told the 15 year-old that the surveillance cameras at a nearby business would be reviewed, he changed his story admitting he had a pistol in his hand as he approached the two (2) victims, but denied "pistol whipping" either one of them. When questioned regarding the handgun, he told investigators the pistol belonged to the mother of one of the other 15 year-old suspects. Davyn William refused to cooperate in this investigation. Detectives Murray and Jobin questioned one of the other 15 year-olds in the presence his mother. He claimed his friend removed his mother's pistol from their residence earlier that day.
