Requesting Public Records from the Sheriff's Office

Under the Louisiana Public Records Law (LRS 44:1 et al), the public has the right to request certain public records from the Sheriff's Office.  While most records are available, there are certain restrictions and exemptions that might preclude an immediate (or any) release of information (e.g., records related to an ongoing criminal investigations, juvenile records, etc.).

To make a Public Records Request of the Sheriff's Office, you should contact the "custodian" of the records.  He/she will respond to your request and provide you with information on if and when the records you requested can be viewed.  Currently, the Sheriff has designated the following persons as the "Custodians" for the Sheriff's Office:

When making your request, please be as specific as possible as to what record or data you are asking for.  You should note that if the data does not exist in the format that you are requesting, the Sheriff is under no obligation to customize or generate forms to fit your needs.  We will make every endeavor to provide the record or data that you are looking for, it just may not be in the exact format that you are seeking.  

Please note that in order to inspect, copy or reproduce any public record, the person making the request must be of the age of majority (i.e., 18 years of age).  

A public records request allows the person to "view" the record at a place and time designated by the Custodian during normal working hours (unless an exemption is made).  The Sheriff's Office hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. 

If the person wants a copy of the public record, they are allowed to request copies from the Custodian. Please note that if you request an electronic version of a record or spreadsheet, it will most likely be provided in a format that will not permit the record to be altered once it is provided (i.e., a .pdf file).  This is done to protect the integrity of the data.

State laws also allow the Sheriff's Office to charge reasonable fees for making copies of public records.
